Daffodil Version 1 Report

Daffodil is a 12 pound "concept bot" -- the concept is to make a bot that is as much drum as feasible.  Here are the specs for version 1 of the bot, which fought at NERC's IHXRC and SECR's Farm Fight.  Originally conceived as a 220lb BattleBot Heavyweight, a 12 lb bot proved a saner thing to start with.
Daffoil was built for the NERC IHXRC competition in Chicago, September 2001.  Not many pictures were taken of its build and we don't have any of the competition itself.  At left is the drive train.  You can also see the plates which hold bearings which are used as rollers.  The drum spun on those rollers, and made a horrific racket doing so!

Unfortunately, Daffodil didn't do very well at IHXRC, mainly because of terrible problems with radio control.  Daffy won its first match and was barely controllable some of the time, but then lost its subsequent two matches simply because it would not respond at all to radio commands, and would only move randomly and sporadically.

IHXRC result:  1 Win, 2 Losses

Daffy verision 1.1 was the same as version 1 except the entire electronics setup was replaced in an effort to cure the gremlins that sidetracked it at IHXRC.  This effort was successful, and Daffy competed at the SECR Farm Fight in Florida, January 2002.  Overall, FF was a much more successful event, since I could communicate with the bot.

However, there were a bunch of other problems that crept up.  During Daffy's first fight, one of the gears in the left drive motor broke and caused that wheel to move erratically throughout the rest of the competition.  Additionally, the hinge holding the drum motor came apart, and the gearbox on the right drive motor came out of its mount!  Daffy won the fight (barely) anyway, and the latter two problems were repaired.  The broken gear caused problems throughout, though.

Nevertheless, Daffy made it to the finals where it lost (for the second time that day) 29-16 to the NERC legend bot 911.  As the picture at left shows, 911 really pounded on Daffodil in the two fights.  But the apparently vulnerable exposed wheels are actually attached pretty well and stood up to the punishment.

911 is now Daffodil's nemesis.

Between the pounding, and a neverending desire to tinker, Daffodil needed to be rebuilt.

Farm Fight result:  3 Wins, 2 Losses.  Second Place.
